A point spread, often referred to simply as “the spread,” is a number set by sportsbooks to create a balanced betting market. It’s used to even the playing field between the favorite and the underdog teams in a sporting event.

The spread represents the margin of victory that the favorite is expected to win by or the underdog is expected to lose by.

The point spread is represented as both a negative and positive number; if the spread is 3 points, you’ll see that as both -3 and +3. The team that is the favorite to win gets the minus-number (-3); the underdog gets the plus-number (+3). The spread is sometimes thought of to be a betting equalizer because it’s designed to turn every game into a 50/50 proposition. The important thing to remember is that even if your team wins the game, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve won the spread bet.

How IntualityAI Sports Works

We apply IntualityAI to derive the ‘true’ odds/point spreads. We factor in expected performance and MOST IMPORTANTLY account for human biases that drive the odds from an optimal performance-based prediction.

It incorporates the effects of the 11 Cognitive Biases — recognized as influencing human behavior — most importantly what drives human decision-making.

We have demonstrated that considering human biases creates profitable betting opportunities. Simply put, IntualityAI Sports contrasts predicted point spreads for NFL football games with available lines from wagering sites and makes wagers and/or recommendations to/for interested parties.

Results over nine years are presented in the figure above showing a 58.3 percent win rate and a strong ROI. Note a win rate of 52.4 percent is considered ‘break even’ as derived through wagering at typical sites and casinos. Since casino table games e.g. blackjack and dice operate with about a 3% edge for the ‘house,’ and that edge is the basis for the construction and operation of mega resort/casinos, picture the value of a 7% plus edge!
